Integrating consciousness

چکیده
Cognitive science has largely assumed we can understand the mind without taking consciousness into account. From an evolutionary perspective, this is not a plausible assumption. The sophisticated display of multiple types of information characteristic of consciousness could not have evolved unless these display formats were functionally integrated into the mind's information processing system. In this paper I advocate setting aside the “hard” mind-body problem as provisionally intractable and embracing the “easy” problem of integrating consciousness into our model of the mind's architectural design. Building on existing models, I develop a basic adaptationist cognitive architecture that incorporates consciousness as a functional feature. I propose it helps solve the problem of coherent belief formation by meeting internal communication needs in a massively modular

Introducing Culturally-Adaptive English Language Pedagogy (CELP): Integrating Critical Cultural Awareness through the ‘little-c’ Culture in Iran’s EFL Curriculum
In teaching a foreign language (FL), some cultural specificities (defined under the rubric of ‘little-c culture’) may totally conflict with the cultural norms of the learners’ first language (L1). To prevent such imminent problems, this paper recommended that the FL syllabus be designed in a way so as to equip learners with an intimate knowledge of the target language culture, and that la...
متن کاملHow can we construct a science of consciousness?
This chapter gives an overview of the projects facing a science of consciousness. Such a science must integrate third-person data about behavior and brain processes with first-person data about conscious experience. Empirical projects for integrating these data include those of contrasting conscious and unconscious processes, investigating the contents of consciousness, finding neural correlate...
متن کاملIntegrating the science of consciousness and anesthesia.
The nature and mechanism of human consciousness is emerging as one of the most important scientific and philosophical questions of the 21st century. Disregarded as a subject of serious inquiry throughout most of the 20th century, it has now regained legitimacy as a scientific endeavor. The investigation of consciousness and the mechanisms of general anesthesia have begun to converge. In the pre...

متن کاملTowards Integrating Husserlian Phenomenology with Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness
The paper presents, first, some general remarks about Husserl’s philosophical Phenomenology in view of relating it to the scientific study of consciousness, and recalls some of the basic methodological tenets of a Husserlian phenomenology of consciousness (I). It then introduces some recent work on so-called “mental imagery” in cognitive psychology and neuroscience (II). Next, a detailed exposi...
